To the hundred scents of the Passion Fruit, we matched one more: Magao. A Taiwanese indigenous little berry that grows on a shrub in the mountains and has the most incredible citrus aroma. The result is Bayan, a one of a kind tropical liqueur that tastes like sunshine.

Taiwan has some of the most amazing fruits, this is due to its subtropical climate and volcanic soil. The local passion fruit production is of the highest quality. BAYAN takes advantage of this unique terroir by sourcing all of our passion fruit from Taiwan’s best farmland near to Puli City in Nantou County.
Puli being on a mountain range benefits from large temperature differences between days and nights, combine with its slighlty acidic, well draining red soil it is the ideal conditions for passion fruit farming.
Magao (馬告) or mountain pepper, is a unique aromatic berry that grows in the high altitude regions of Taiwan, treasured by the Aborigenes, it has a bright lemongrass like aroma with a hint of peppery warmth that enhances and matches perfectly the tropical sweetness of passion fruit.
For centuries, Taiwan’s indigenous Atayal and Bunun tribes have cherished Magao, using it in both their cuisine and traditional medicine. Believed to aid digestion and offer anti-inflammatory benefits, Magao represents a natural wellness connection that aligns with Bayan’s commitment to quality, natural ingredients.
Harvested by hand from Taiwan’s remote mountains, Magao is rare and culturally significant. Each berry tells the story of Taiwan’s rich landscape and indigenous heritage. In every sip of Bayan, there’s a hint of these mountains, bringing the spirit of Taiwan to life.
